The Unexpected Genesis: A History of Dahl
The First Age: Birth from Wild Magic
(100,000,000 Years Ago)
Dahl is not an intended creation, but a beautiful and volatile accident. Approximately 100,000,000 years ago, the cosmos was scarred by the titanic War of the Primordial Divide, fought between the greater and lesser gods for ultimate dominion over existence. In the heat of this conflict, a confluence of divine energies—a single, catastrophic act of world-shaping magic by an unnamed Greater Deity—went spectacularly wrong.
Instead of a planned celestial fortress, the unleashed power tore open the fabric of reality, coalescing into the vibrant, unstable material plane now known as Dahl. Because it was born from pure, wild, and unfettered divine magic, the very Ley Lines of Dahl pulse with abnormal strength. This legacy is why magic is so potent, unpredictable, and readily available across the world—it is woven into the planet’s geological core.
Dahl serves as the Prime World acting as the nexus point that naturally attracts and anchors all major planes, both inner and outer. The Glowing Covert of Dinnephan, with it’s flickering fluorescent trees, shares several shifting borders with the Feywild. While the deep volcanic vents of the Shattered Pinnacle are rumored to contain nascent rifts leading directly to the Nine Hells and the chaotic realms of the Abyss.
The Age of Iron and Blood: The Great World War
(150 Years Ago)
For millennia, Dahl was ruled by disparate, warring kingdoms of humans, dwarves, orcs, elves, and others. About 200 years ago, a confluence of failed harvests, dwindling resources, and a sudden surge in Leer’s powerful influence led to the horrific conflict known as the Great World War.
This was an era of unprecedented devastation, where alliances fractured daily, and entire cities were consumed by arcane weaponry. Hundreds of millions of innocents died. The ancient Elvin kingdom, fractured and near collapse, seemed destined to fall alongside its neighbors.
In the midst of this chaos, a brilliant young Elvin commander named Arefedal rose through the ranks. Unlike other warlords who sought conquest, Arefedal sought unity. He was not the rightful heir to the Elvin throne; the royal line had been decimated. Instead, he won support through devastatingly effective strategic genius, unyielding personal courage on the battlefield, and, crucially, his merciful treatment of conquered peoples.
During the decisive Siege of the Three Oaks, Arefedal masterfully used a rare alignment of Peet and Leer to channel a surge of magical power, breaking the siege lines of the Orcish and Human coalition. This victory effectively ended the war by demonstrating that a unified Elven force, guided by a disciplined leader, was insurmountable.
Arefedal was not coronated; he was elected by consensus by the surviving leaders of the major races, desperate for peace. He took the title of Emperor, uniting the world of Dahl under a single, strong banner dedicated to preventing further global conflict.
The Emerald Reign: Emperor Arefedal
(Present Day)
Emperor Arefedal is now approximately 200 years old, having ruled for 150 years. He resides in the breathtaking capital city of Traeliorn, a spectacular tree-city built high in the canopy of the Elvin Forest of Aethel.
Arefedal’s long reign is defined by a deep and complex character: he is intrinsically kind and diplomatic, yet fierce when protecting the fragile peace he established. He is renowned as the most just ruler Dahl has ever known, often personally presiding over disputes between species. His ultimate goal is to hold the world together, keenly aware that the chaos that birthed Dahl could one day easily consume it.
Celestial Tides: The Moons of Leer and Peet
The skies of Dahl are dominated by two deeply influential moons, whose cyclical orbits heavily affect arcane energy and the tides of history.
Peet, the Lavender Mother: The larger of the two moons, Peet casts a breathtaking lavender hue over the night. Peet’s cycle dictates the standard measure of time, completing an orbit every 20 days (1 Dahl Month). Peet is associated with stability, natural magic, and emotional resilience. Mages often find their spells more controlled and powerful during Peet’s full phase.
Leer, the Acidic Eye: Roughly two-fifths the size of Peet, Leer is an unnerving, sickly acidic lime green. Its cycle is much slower, orbiting once every 60 days (3 Dahl Months). Leer is a harbinger of chaos; its full light is believed to cause mutation, heighten aggressive tendencies, and amplify the wild, unpredictable nature of raw magic.
Lands of Civilization and Peril
The world of Dahl is scattered with settlements ranging from centers of learning to chaotic trade hubs:
Major Cities
Traeliorn (Aethel Forest): The Elvin capital, a marvel of living architecture built into ancient trees. The center of political and magical study.
Grumore (Dreso): A massive human city built near rich iron mines in the Dreso foothills, known for its disciplined army and pragmatic bureaucracy.
Norathor (Questrua): The ancient heart of the scholarly and priestly classes in the region of Questrua, famed for its monumental libraries and devotion to the Greater Gods.
Ayslin Gulch (Ubrington): A notorious trading port and swamp city built on massive wooden pylons deep in the Ubrington marshlands, where goods and information (both legal and illicit) flow freely.
Places of Mystery and Danger
The Dragon’s Maw: A massive, dormant caldera constantly venting sulfurous smoke, rumored to be the impact site of the divine magic that created the world, or perhaps a gateway to the lower planes.
Angry Fields: A vast expanse of perpetually disturbed earth where the dead do not stay buried. It is a haunted battlefield from the Great World War, infused with necromantic energies that prevent crop growth and defy conventional burial rites.
Shattered Pinnacle: A mountain peak that mysteriously broke off and now floats several hundred feet above the ground. It is said to be the home of reclusive elementals or a long-lost observatory used by the warring gods.
Crimson Lush: A vibrant, unnaturally saturated jungle where all plant life, from the smallest moss to the largest trees, is shades of deep red. The air is thick with hallucinogenic spores, and beasts here are dangerously oversized.
